This
is the ninth and present King of Thailand, he is the longest reigning monarch
in the world.
I never encountered a Thai who did not speak of him with a genuine reverence
and awe, as they would a beloved father. On
the evening before we were to leave Thailand and return to the states, we
noticed our boulevard, which was always teaming with traffic, was strangely
quiet and people were beginning to quietly line the sides of the street. It
wasn't long before we discerned the reason. Rolling down the middle of Namwongwan
Blvd. came the motorcycles of the King's motorcade, followed by a beautiful
pale yellow Rolls Royce. All bowed as his car rolled by. I snuck a glimpse
to see him sitting bolt upright alone in the middle of the back seat, wearing
a white cap and uniform. It was really quite a moment.
